One of the very first beaches I visited with my family when I moved to England five years ago was Studland Bay in Dorset. And it’s a beach we keep returning to. How can I describe Studland? Let’s just say it’s all things perfect when it comes to a day out at the seaside.

Safe, shallow waters for children to wade and swim in? Check.

Beautiful sand dunes to walk and play? Check.

Gorgeous views of the countryside hugging the coast and white chalked cliffs? Check.

Long stretch of soft sand? Check.

A wee place to get a coffee and nibble? Check.

It’s a stunning place to spend a day. And most of the time (other than weekends & summer holidays!), it’s actually on the quiet side, especially if you are willing to walk easterly on the sandy stretch at Knoll Beach, which is our favourite out of the four beaches. (But do be aware that if you go to the very end, there are those who, ahem, enjoy the sun on every part of their bodies.;) The other three beaches at Studland are Shell Bay, South Beach and Middle Beach.

Kids can play in the deep dips of the sand dunes. And there’s just incredibly beautiful, peaceful views. You will see the Isle of Wight and Old Harry, the large, chalked rock jutting out from the sea. The cool thing about this stack is that it is the first major landmark walkers doing the 630 mile South Coast Path from east to west will see.

The Practicals

Please bear in mind that once car parks fill up, you will be asked to come at another time. (During this time of COVID, National Trust is not currently opening as many car parking spaces as they normally would.)

Parking is Pay and Display; National Trust members park free.

Car park hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Toilets open at Shell Bay, Knoll Beach & Middle Beach.

Dogs are most definitely allowed, but during the summer months (1 May to 30 September), they are to be kept on a short lead.

There is a naturist beach at the very end of Knoll Beach, which is very clearly marked.

There is a wee eating area at Knoll Beach for coffee and a bite to eat as well as a wee shop. (Again, during COVID, it will be card payment only and face masks are required.)
