I’m convinced Snow White lived here at one time. You won’t find her seven dwarves here nowadays, but I can give you seven amazing reasons why you’d want to seek out this treasure spot.
1.) The Appearance & Atmosphere: A Sensory Delight
C’mon! Just look at it! This is the closest thing to experiencing an afternoon tea at a fairytale cottage. It really does feel like you could be anywhere in the world, even a make-believe one. ;)
2.) Outdoor Seating
Enjoy your tea and scones on one of the many outdoor picnic tables or pick a space on the grass to relax. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful woodland trees, hear the gently flowing river and enjoy the cafe’s own symphony of birdsong.
3.) The River
When you venture outside the cafe’s gates, the sparkling river is waiting to be explored. It’s just begging to have toes dipped in and stones skimmed across.
4.) The Cave
Although it is very small, my children wanted me to add this feature as they had so much fun exploring this wee dugout. It can be found opposite the cafe on the other side of the river.
5.) Walking Trails
From the path outside the cafe you can take a woodsy walk that leads you to the coastal village of Lynmouth or head to Rockford.
6.) The Food
Since tea has been served here for over 100 years, you can most certainly believe it’s done right. Enjoy a wee treat of scones and clotted cream and why not try it with whortleberry jam (a wild bilberry that grows in Exmoor).
7.) The History
Oh all right, I admit Snow White didn’t live here. It was a actually built in the early 1800’s and used as a home and fishing lodge. It is, I believe, what helps this area boast of an incredibly homey feel.
There you have it. My seven reasons to make your way here. I hope you can travel to this hidden fairy tale cottage!
Practically speaking…
Bring coins: the tearoom is a National Trust property, but the carpark is not and you will be required to pay (Pay and Display) even if you are a NT member. You may want to wear good walking shoes as the walk from the car park down to the cafe is a bit steep. Dogs are welcome on the outside grassy area and walks, but please do keep them on leads. You will find more information, directions and opening times here.
